The significance of the color purple in Amy Clipston's new book "Courting Emily" on www.amishwisdom.com

Welcome to Amish Wisdom Spotlight! Stop by my blog each Monday to see what’s been happening at amishwisdom.com. This week, Amy Lillard shares about her new release, Courting Emily.

Sometimes the story behind the story can let a little too much out, but I have to tell you about the significance of the color purple in my latest Amish romance, Courting Emily.

First, let me say I pride myself on being a planner. I may be able to get an editor on board with a project with just a page or two, but when it comes down to writing, I like a detailed synopsis. I like to know where the story is going.

There are times though when situations and ideas come out of the story. I believe they call this organic writing. Well, the purple portion of Courting Emily was part of my organic writing experience. The significance of the color purple in Amy Lillard's new book "Courting Emily" on www.amishwisdom.com

Here’s a little backstory. Elam Riehl works too hard at being the patriarch of his family. His father, James, was kicked in the head by a milk cow the year before and since then has been very childlike and ill.  With Emily’s help, James starts to come around and become a more productive and vital part of his family once again. In the process, James becomes obsessed with all things purple, including Emily’s dresses.

Confession: I love purple. My high school colors included purple. I have been known to wear purple eyeliner, purple track suits, and purple sneakers on a regular basis. So I guess it was only natural that when James needed a fixation to help him through it was purple.

But I never saw it coming.

When I realized that purple had become so important to the story, I emailed my editor and asked if we could make the cover model’s dress purple. He explained they had already been working on the cover but he would ask. Imagine my delight when I saw the cover and Emily’s dark purple dress. The beautiful cover even has purple writing!
