I was reading in the Bible this week about Moses’ desire to see the face of God. A bold request on his part! But I understand it. Don’t we all have a longing to see God?

A few years ago, forensic scientists tried to re-create the face of Jesus. Vastly different from the blue-eyed version model that’s been circulating in westernized Christian history the last few centuries.

Anyway, despite our longing to see God’s actual face, the truth is that we simply can’t. He is a holy God and we are so… not holy.

Here’s a practical illustration of why we can’t look at the face of God: This is a video of Venus dancing across the face of the sun.
Sun

Isn’t it amazing to observe? The roiling surface of the sun, flames swirling and snarling at Venus as she floats by on her celestial path.

We can’t even look at the sun directly without going blind. And the sun is quite tiny compared to some of the gigantic stars in the universe like Betelgeuse, which is about 400 times bigger than our sun, and 10,000 times brighter! And God made those stars, so imagine how much bigger and brighter and therefore, more blinding He is!

And that, my friends, is why we can’t gaze at the face of God. We are too limited, too small, too flawed. More importantly, He is too holy!

“Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to gain” (Psalm 139:6, niv). Amen!
