Summer Memories

For much of my childhood, I was raised by a single mom, which meant summer vacations were a rarity. But for me, that was fine. Because when I think about summer memories, one thing comes to mind. Reading. You see, I was always the girl with a book in my hand. If I wasn’t in school, doing homework, or chores, I was reading. I devoured Nancy Drew Mysteries, the Little House on the Prairie series, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Island of the Blue Dolphins, and A Wrinkle in Time. Later on, my obsession turned to gothic mysteries, and I read every Victoria Holt book I could get my hands on.

Weekly trips to the library were a given throughout the summer. I’d spend hours, content just to browse the shelves, always leaving with a thick stack of books in my hands. My mother still reminds me to this day that during those long summer breaks, if she couldn’t find me, she knew I’d be reading up in the tree next to our house, escaping once again into the pages of another good book.
