Last night, at 1:30 a.m., I heard the dogs roughhousing in the hallway outside of my bedroom door. I got up, wondering WHY they were not in the laundry room where they usually sleep.

I knew the answer.

As much as I love having my kids home from college for the summer, they do not share the same urgency I feel about household matters. Say, for example, locking up the house and turning out the lights.

So… I put the dogs away but discovered that they had been on a scavenger hunt during their midnight romp. They had found the four leftover boxes of truffles that I had placed high up on a shelf in my daughter’s room for her to enjoy when she returned from her honeymoon.

THE DOGS ATE THEM.

So again, I am spending today expecting my poor beloved dogs to die at any moment. They, however, seem quite healthy and happy and, unlike me, ignorant of the knowledge that chocolate is toxic to them.
