If you want to feel good, do good!

Helping others is not only good for them and a good thing to do, it also makes us happier and healthier too.

Doing good deeds builds connections, creates stronger communities and helps to build a happier society for everyone. It doesn’t have to be  about money – we can give our time, ideas and energy. Just plain thoughtfulness.

Do you know someone who recently lost his job? Or a single mom who may be struggling financially? The next time you are standing in the checkout line at the grocery store or Walmart, buy a gift card and mail it to them in an unsigned card that says: “Thinking of You.” While they may be embarrassed to take help otherwise, an anonymous gift is easier to accept.

Do you love to bake? The next time you make cookies, cupcakes or bread, make an extra batch. Stick it in the freezer, so you’re ready to share with a neighbor, a sick friend, a new church member.

Do you clip coupons? Even if you  don’t need certain ones, like Pampers or Depends, clip them anyway and leave them on the shelf next to the diapers for a shopper to find, or give them to someone as you pass by going down the aisle.

Do you have a stack of books that you’ve already read? Take them to hospitals, nursing homes or dialysis and cancer treatment centers. Even if the patient themselves are not able to read the books, family members in the waiting rooms will appreciate the distraction.

There are so many small ways you can show kindness and love to others. I have a hunch you’ll feel the benefit of doing good deeds. Kindness is contagious.

“In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:16, niv).
