I don’t know how pioneers survived. My garden is enclosed, well tended, and yet nearly every week, there is some kind of middle-of-the-night invader who ruins a thriving plant.
Below was a gorgeous sunflower, just about to open, that suddenly had its stalk chewed about two feet up from its base. It seemed like the work of a deer, but my fences are too high for deers. A mystery…
I tried to do a repair job on it. Sometimes…it can work. Not this time, though. Alas.
Something else has been nibbling my zucchini. I’m thinking … raccoon. Any ideas?

I think it is deer. Our fences are every bit that high, and I have watched them clear ours, even the younger members of the family. They eat our birdseed every winter, our flowers every summer, especially day lilies! Then, they all lie down and take a little nap! We have now planted deer resistant perennials and purchased deer motion detectors through one of those 20 catalogs we receive in the mail. Seems to be working. I know how you feel. I love our deer, but it is frustrating.
Deer…..CAN JUMP very high! I would sure imagine it might be deer, or even Nutria or raccoons! We had some tomato plants pulled clear out of the ground, and the tops eaten off others! The raccoons manage to empty the birdseed each nite, (I have seen them, in action!) and also eat all of the cat food, if it is left out! Good Luck Suzanne! ;o)
Very wasteful aren’t they. Nibble off just a bit and go on to the next. As for deer jumping fences I’ve seen some jump some very high fences and with little effort. If you had an electric fence maybe but then some folks might say that was cruel. It makes you wonder why you put out so much effort to plant the garden and care for it. A lot of work if you don’t get to enjoy the fruits of your labors.
