Give me the Simple Life: Starry, Starry Night

I read recently that, in Hebrew tradition, naming something meant that you had an intimate knowledge of it. About the same time, I came across this beautiful verse written by an ancient psalmist:

“He determines the number of the stars and calls them each by name” (Psalm 147:4).

And here’s the prophet Isaiah’s variation on the theme:

“Lift up your eyes and look to the heavens: Who created all these? He who brings out the starry host one by one and calls forth each of them by name. Because of his great power and mighty strength, not one of them is missing” (Isaiah 40:26).

If God makes and calls each star by name (billions!) . . . imagine how much He loves you and me. Imagine how insignificant our day-to-day worries truly are when the God of the Universe holds our life in His capable hands.

  1. Sharon says:

I love reading anything about the Amish. You are a fantastic author and I have read many of your books.

  2. We’ve been studying the Psalms in our Ladies Sunday School class. Psalm 8 was a favorite among us, because is says the exact same thing….How could an Awesome God, the One who made the Heavens and the stars, look down at the earth and know exactly where I am, and love me, and know my name?
