Lynette SowellWhat is the smartest writing advice you ever got?

Finish the book!

What was your biggest break?

When a fellow writer (Rachel Hauck) invited me to join in on a proposal for a novella collection for Barbour, back in 2005. I was the only unpublished one in the group at the time. I haven’t looked back since. Not that I haven’t had doubts, like all writers do at some point, but I find my best breaks have come because of my fellow writers.

I’m inspired by…

Wide open spaces, nuggets of history trivia, a great book that keeps coming to mind after I’ve finished reading, true inspiring stories I see in the news.

My great adventure has been…

Packing everything I owned in my car and moving to Texas when I was 24, to spread my wings.

Describe yourself in one word:

If your house were on fire, what one thing would you save?

My laptop. I was going to say our pets, but they’re not things; they’re part of the family. But with my laptop, I can work anywhere. We have too many photos to save at once. After our home was broken into more than 10 years ago and we were robbed, I learned that things are replaceable.

What has been your most surreal, “pinch-me-I’m-dreaming” moment so far?

I distinctly remember when I arrived in Pinecraft for the first time for a visit in January 2012. I remember seeing the bicycles, the three-wheelers, the ladies in cape dresses and head coverings, younger women wearing flip-flops, the men with beards and suspenders, and thinking: “Wow, I’m really here! Oh, thank You, Lord!” And I did want to pinch myself.

What drives you to succeed?A Season of Change cover PK

I don’t like being wasteful—of time, talent, or whatever God has blessed me with. Being successful to me is making use of all those wisely.

Best Forgotten Custom:

Sitting down to breakfast together in the morning.

Best Way to Break a Sweat:

Going for a long walk.

Best Style Icon:

Jacqueline Kennedy.

Best Time-Waster:

Candy Crush. (Shhhh)

Best Indulgence:

Buying snow crab legs from the seafood department and eating them all by myself.

Best Advice

“People aren’t as concerned with me as I think they are; they’re too busy worrying about themselves.” I can’t remember who I heard say that, but the older I’ve gotten, the more I realize it’s true.

Suzanne Woods Fisher writes bestselling, award winning fiction and non-fiction books about the Old Order Amish for Revell Books. Her interest in the Plain People began with her Old Order German Baptist grandfather, raised in Franklin County, Pennsylvania. Suzanne's app, Amish Wisdom, delivers a daily Amish proverb to your phone or iPad. She writes a bi-monthly column for Christian Post and Cooking & Such magazine. She lives with her family in California and raises puppies for Guide Dogs for the Blind. To Suzanne's way of thinking, you can't take life too seriously when a puppy is running through your house with someone's underwear in its mouth.
