Welcome to Author Spotlight! Each week will feature a different author. We’ll get the scoop behind their writing life and dish a little. The authors will also be giving away a copy of their latest book. FUN.

The winner from last week’s Author Spotlight with Nancy Moser is Vicki Curl! Please email with your mailing address!

This week we are featuring Lisa T. Bergren!  To win a copy of her new book, Glittering Promises (David C. Cook, 2013) leave a comment on this post.

LBegren-132Tell us a little about your new book . . .

Glittering Promises is the third in my Grand Tour trilogy. The series follows a group of wealthy young Americans on the Grand Tour of Europe, and this is the dramatic conclusion in my favorite spot on the planet . . . ITALY! On the surface, it’s a journey of discovery of art, politics, history, and famous landmarks. Delving deeper, it’s really a discovery of relationships and identity.

Anything new for you on the book horizon?

Always, especially as I finish the third book in a series! Next up is a dystopian series for Zondervan called Remnants, which begins to release in February.

Why do you write?

Because I’m fond of eating. And a roof over my head. That said, it’s my favorite work to do . . . but it IS work.

Best author moment?

Holding my very first book in my hands. Totally surreal.

Worst author moment?

Realizing I was burned out and deciding to turn down three different publishing offers. I didn’t write another word for three years. Didn’t miss it at all. I call it my fallow season. But then . . . I was BACK.

Right this moment, what does your office look like?

Organized piles all around me. I think that’s a sign of creativity, according to what I’ve read. But I have to LEAVE my office in order to concentrate on my writing. I usually go to the library.

Glittering-PromisesEver had a bad review? How’d you handle it?

Of course. Reading is subjective, and I know my style isn’t going to be everyone’s favorite. At first, it was really hard. Like a slap to the face. And it’s still a slap, when I read them. But I realize that I only need to please my core audience and that others will find their favorite reads, even if it’s not mine. You build up a pretty thick skin as an author, and I’ve been at this for twenty years!

What’s one thing you learned about the publishing industry in the last five years? Last year? Last six months?

In the last five years: It’s changing and e-publishing is radically changing the landscape; luckily, I jumped in as a “hybrid author” (publishing both traditionally and as an indie on my own) and am riding the wave.
Last year: Publishing is cyclical. If you write historical women’s fiction and no one is buying that, wait a year or two. It will come back around.
Last six months: If you’re going to e-publish and be successful, you have to consistently e-publish more to stay in front of readers.

Are you an introvert? Extrovert? In between?

I’m an introvert who can fake being an extrovert. I love people, but they exhaust me.

Can a person make a living as a writer?

Yes, but it takes a long-term investment of writing on the side, and keeping the day job, until you’re secure enough to go full-time on the writing. It also helps to have a spouse who brings in some consistent income too. Writers’ financial lives tend to be feast or famine.

Years ago, after a move, I was going through a time of feeling useless, restless, and unhappy because I no longer was in a place to do what I had been doing. A dear friend reminded me that the Lord has given us seasons, and maybe that was my season to sit back and relax in Him.
I’m glad you listened and took you fallow time to rejuvenate. Welcome back.

  67. Darlene E says:

Oh how I would love to go to Italy….I love to read Christian books!!! Lisa is new to me. If I were to win (pick me please) I would of course get the whole series :).

  68. Suzanne Dawson says:

I would love to win “Glittering Promises”. I am an avid reader and would rather hold an autographed book in my hand and be able to look at on the shelf and remember what it was about than read it on my Nook. Holding it is like being there at that place and time.

  69. Nat Homgren says:

Thanks for more books to relax with!
